Local apprentices hired

Scotland’s leading roofing and cladding contractor Marley Contract Services is creating a lasting legacy in North Ayrshire by recruiting a large number of apprentices and adult trainees.

The company is doing this as part of the North Ayrshire Council’s Term Contract Apprentice and Trainee Recruitment Scheme.

As principal contractor on the project Marley Contract Services is responsible for renovating, re-roofing and re-rendering thousands of homes within North Ayrshire Council communities. The company also manages the replacement of PVC-U fascias and soffits and the removal and improvements to chimneys and fireplaces.”

After being awarded a major ‘three+one+one’ year rendering and roofing contract with North Ayrshire Council, the company was required to recruit one person from the local community in which it was working for every £1m of issued funds – ‘One in a Million’.

Marley Contract Services went above and beyond this and has already directly appointed four local apprentices and seven local trainee operatives to support the project – far more than that required for the funds issued. The company has also initiated a new apprentice and trainee system with their sub contractors which has led to the recruitment of a further seven local operatives.

With potentially nearly two years of the refurbishment programme remaining, the company is confident of increasing the total number of apprentices further.

The apprentices and trainees are from all age groups and Marley Contract Services is committed to supporting their continued development by encouraging them to gain a minimum NVQ Level 2 qualification.

“By supporting people from the local community with an apprenticeship programme we are giving them the opportunity to achieve the skills they require to enter the workplace,” said Billy Baird, Projects Director of Marley Contract Services. “We have seen first-hand how apprentices are a valued part of our team and benefit the community long term, which is why we have gone beyond the minimum number required for the issued funds.”

Marley Contract Services has consistently performed to KPI’s set by North Ayrshire Council on the contract. This includes Progress against programme (100%), Percentage of properties accepted at handover (100%) and Customer Satisfaction is continually above the council’s expectations and targets.

Marley Contract Services are part of The Considerate Constructors scheme. The company continues to set the benchmark by scoring very high on the three consecutive audits to date. This is an ‘exceptionally good site’ and means that Marley Contract Services looks set to be entered into the Scheme’s Annual National Awards.
